Castletown Mural’s

Jimmy Squarefoot

I was approached to the Castletown commissioners in 2022 to create murals in town as a part of their mission to create more publicly accessible art. I created two pieces based on Manx folklore. The first was based on the legend of Jimmy Squarefoot, a little less known character when compared with the Mooinjer Veggey or the Begane.

I’ve ofter found Jimmy to be quite a sad character and misunderstood. He often wants to be left alone in the glen he calls home so for the painting as you walk or drive by he appears to be fleeing further into the lane.

The Silver Cup

The second mural the I created while working with the Castletown Commissioners was completed in 2023 and was based on the folk tale of the Silver cup, which is one of my favourites from Sophia Morrison’s Manx folktales Book. I feel as though the story holds a lot of what we think of when we picture the Mooinjer Veggey. Little mischievous horrors that roam the landscape playing tricks the the helpless on Manx folk. I like this story because there is a lot of drama and action throughout the narrative, and I wanted to capture that by depicting the scene in which the farmer, angered by the injustice done to him by themselves steals their prized silver cup and runs away as they give chase.

Ramsey Promenade Mural

In 2022 I was given the opportunity by the Ramsey Town Commissioners to create an art piece for the Ramsey promenade. I based my piece on elements of the Islands unique identity, through imagery based on our folklore, history and culture.

It was made to be a celebration of Manx life and showcase what makes life on our island so special.
